The Atlantic’s Molly Ball jumps on the bandwagon of believers who insist that Tuesday was a horrible, horrible day for liberals and the Democratic Party. Among here more curious examples of liberals losing big time is this:
The San Francisco sheriff who had defended the city’s sanctuary policy after a sensational murder by an illegal immigrant was voted out.
I happen to live in San Francisco, so I can speak about this a bit. The voted-out sheriff is named Ross Mirkarimi. Almost immediately after his election to sheriff from the Board of Supervisors, he was tangled up in a nasty domestic abuse scandal. He managed to stay in office despite pleading guilty to a misdemeanor, but I don’t think his standing or popularity ever recovered. San Francisco elections were rather low-key this year, so I needed to do a search to see if the sanctuary law was a big issue. The only information I can find via Google is right-wing sites like Hot Air, Free Republic, and Tea Party.org writing about Mirkarimi losing his election. There is no indication that San Francisco voters thought that the sanctuary law that protected undocumented people needs to repealed.
In other news, San Francisco has not elected a Republican Mayor since 1964, and we haven’t had a Republican Congressperson since 1949. There hasn’t been a Republican on the Board of Supervisors since 1978.
So please tell me, how is this San Francisco Sheriff election supposed to be a sign of liberals and the Democratic Party losing the culture war?
